Feeling a bit Blah? Get your Zest back!

Posted by:

It’s a fact that life is not always smooth sailing and does not always go to plan. There’s nothing to be done about that, but what we can do is learn to work around it. When it comes to exercise, it’s a case of not only having to have the time but the energy to get stuck into a workout. The good news is that even when we ‘drop the ball’ we can always get our zest back!

Last month for me was a write off. I got a terrible flu, which seemed to take weeks to get over. Having very little energy it was all I could do to keep the laundry up to date and put dinner on the table. A workout was not on my radar. So, of course, I ended up with the symptoms of doing nothing…my behind was heading south, my back was starting to hurt and I just felt blah.

Do you ever wake up and think, “something needs to change and today’s the day to make it happen!” It’s one thing to not feel on top of your game, or not feel sexy, or not feel the vitality and zest for life that you know is possible. It’s another to feel like you have no idea where to start in heading in the direction of those desires.

This was my one saving grace after my recent workout deficit…I could look in the mirror without going into despair or catastrophising, for I have a few tricks up my sleeve that means I am never too far away from having a body that feels supple, healthy and vibrant and makes me feel confident…wait for it…Callanetics (of course!) I know I can spend three hours exercising this week, without breaking a sweat or even putting on shoes, and be slipping into my skinny jeans again.

The point I’m trying to make is, no matter what stage of life you are in, Callanetics is one of those things that you will always be empowered by. Even if you have never done it, or have had a break of even years, it’s a wonderful thing to know you actually can reverse problems caused by incorrect alignment (often thought to be related to the ageing process) and not only have a body you really love!

Can you relate to that feeling of just wishing you knew how to get rid of that muffin top, or tone up your thighs, behind and hips or how to pull in your waist and flatten your abs? Well it’s time for you to make a comeback! Why don’t you join me, and many others, who are empowered by the practice of Callanetics?

Action steps to getting (re) started

Option One

1. First thing you can do is what we are all pretty good at. Decide you will workout tomorrow. But this time, instead of just saying it halfheartedly, get out your workout clothes and lay them out ready for the morning. I have even heard of people replacing pajamas with workout clothes so they are ready as soon as they rise!

2. Rather than commit yourself to a full 30 minute to an hour workout, just decide to warm up. That’s it. You might find you feel like getting in a little bit of arms. This is likely to snowball throughout the day and you will find that you ‘accidently’ did a whole workout without even meaning to.  It’s almost as if you have coerced yourself to workout!

Option Two

1. In this option you make yourself accountable to someone else. It’s a proven fact that you are less likely to give a workout a miss if you have told someone in advance that you are planning to do it! If you can’t find an accountability buddy, just check into The Café or comment on this blog! We will be here to check up on you.

2. Schedule in your workout. Rather than just say “I’ll workout tomorrow,” narrow it down to “I will workout at 9:30am tomorrow.” As with the above option, once you start, you’ll get all that blood flowing and be feeling so good you’ll inspire yourself to keep going until your whole body is revitalized and feeling pulled in!

Even easier, start with this 13 minute workout to get the ball rolling right now!

I wholeheartedly agree with every word. During my “flirting” decades I always told myself that someday I would get back to Callanetics. Every time I restarted I gained tremendous benefits, even though I wandered away again. I credit those brief brushes with Callanetics with keeping me from deteriorating further.

Now that I’ve proven to myself that I can stay consistent I have set some basic guidelines. The primary one is to begin by 11 AM NO MATTER WHAT. This keeps me more consistent. I find that missing that start time means the time is lost to the demands of the day.

Being part of the Cafe has also kept me on schedule and super motivated. Love this site. 🙂

I love the sound if these guidelines, Susan! Giving yourself a deadline is a great idea 🙂

I write down the days of the week on my whiteboard. I then write my Callenetics “goal” which currently is 5 sessions. A session could be 20min or 60+ it’s more about me getting into the habit of doing the work. I can see what I’ve done and I don’t like blank spaces. I build in rest days too. On Sunday I write everything down in a journal then reset my board.

It can help to have inspiring quotes or just a few words. Mine currently has “Progress. Small Steps. Momentum”

Dani, how wonderful to see you posting. The Cafe forum is running and it’s a good place to post. Love your journalling. I’m a huge fan of this also. I’ve just bought Brendan Buchard’s Planning Journal and I’m excited to get that going, Inspiring quotes are fabulous. Mine at the moment is Jim Rohn’s “A few simple disciplines practiced every day”
