I have some exciting news!

Posted by:

The last two months have been turbulent. Well, that may bit a little dramatic but for anyone who has been through the same thing will understand.

Here’s what happened… In August I was sick with a bad flu. Even when I was better it took another three weeks to recover fully and regain normal energy. The point is, I didn’t workout out in any way shape or form for the whole month. For me this is not the norm.

Usually I get in two Callanetics workouts a week and that is enough to maintain a body shape I am happy with and not feel like I am seizing up like the tin man.

Now, we have spoken before and answered many questions that come to us through email and through the café about people feeling as if they are getting bigger, rather than smaller. Our advice is to either give your muscles a rest to let everything settle down or to back up your session as soon as you can to make the pull in even better when it comes.

pre pull in puff with TCS time to workout

Puffed out! This puffiness was all over my body. My thighs, hips and belly were all soft and puffy, like a waterbed. This photo was taken on Wednesday 17 September 2014

After the non-event that was August, I hit September with at least four workouts a week. I was sure to mix up the exercises and pulses to get the toning happening from all angles. You can probably already guess what happened…I got puffy! I had not experienced this in some time because I was happily maintaining my shape and fitness, rather than trying to really take it up a level. After nothing for a month up was the only way to go as far as I was concerned!

We had a filming booked in and I was all puffed out. I questioned my diet, nothing different there. I even stepped on the scales (which I rarely do) and there was only the usual fluctuations. I called Sandra and we pondered what I must be going through… the pre-pull-in-puff!

With filming on the Thursday and me all blown up on the Wednesday I was not feeling on top of my game. I had been feeling very strong in my workouts and was frustrated at my jeans getting tighter. So I did a workout on the Wednesday. On Thursday morning I woke up and felt as if I must have swapped bodies overnight!!

what a workout! The pull in from TCS

The next day…Callanetics delivers! The innermost muscles have found their new resting place and pulled in the outer muscles. No more puffiness! This was taken on Thursday 18th September 2014 behind the scenes during filming.

I stood up out of bed and I could feel that I was slender and pulled right in. I went to check in the mirror. When I lifted up my top a bit to inspect the tummy that had been protruding the night before, I was very excited to see a flat stomach with definition! Apart from being so excited to have my body back to a point that I was feeling good about it, I was so pumped to go and film the workout for next month!

So the take home is?

  • EVERYONE goes through the same stages of body transformation, no matter how long you have been practicing Callanetics.
  • Just because you fell like things are moving around and you’re not liking it, does NOT mean you should stop! You are about to have a breakthrough!
  • After a break, even if it’s years, you CAN get your body back into the shape you are happy with and that you will feel strong and confident in!

So now I have two questions for you. First, have you ever experienced the pre-pull-in-puff? Second, how long did it last before you came out the other side?

What an interesting and well written story! First of all, when I read the headline and scanned down to see the bit of your ‘puffy’ belly, I immediately assumed something that doesn’t seem to be the case!

I haven’t yet experience the pre pull in puffiness (love that alliteration!) because I haven’t been diligent enough as yet with full workouts regularly enough. I’ve also done about two a week, with a few pulses in my two to three classes a week.

All that’s set to change as I experience my Test the Teacher challenge in October — 31 sessions of Callanetics, starting Wed 1 Oct! I’ll be doing before and after measurements and picture and will write about my experience; I really hope I DON’T get puffy though, but if it happens I can be reassured that things will pull in again!

I am so pleased that you posted this as this is exactly what I’m going through at the moment! I usually do Callanetics regularly but over the summer I really didn’t do any sessions as I was enjoying the holidays so much! A couple of months later and I’ve got back round to starting my sessions again but haven’t been happy with the results. I suppose I expected that after a a week or so my body would return to the way it looked before but in fact I feel bigger and my clothes are a bit tighter. This blog has cheered me up as now I know I just need a little bit of patience and all will be fine!

Hey Catriona, we totally understand how that this outcome from your workouts is super scary. However, do try to see it as a positive and forward step to deeper, fabulous results. After a period of regular workouts you start to refine your technique. You’re isolating your muscles more effectively, your pulses become smaller and smoother and you start to relax more when in position and training. So, when you resume your workouts after a break your brain will immediately kick in to do the exercises the way you did them prior to break. Even though you may have lost muscle tone and strength you will still be working out at an intermediate/advanced level. If you then do three-6 workouts in a short period of time this puffy result an be the result from your efforts. Disheartening, I know but, as Adelaide’s blog detailed, one more workout or a days rest, can change everything. Let us know please how you go 🙂

I had this happen just yesterday (was it yesterday? I’m losing track with the monotony of the hospital). I got up early and went into my session and then on to my day. You all know how thoughtfully I perform my Callanetics sessions, and yesterday was no exception. Typically the session leaves me feeling slender and pulled in, but yesterday I spent the day feeling puffy and bloated. I’ve been careful about eating during this hospital stay with Dale, so I was pretty sure it wasn’t the standard breakfast or the Greek yogurt with graham cracker I always have for lunch. I chalked it up to so much down time sitting, but it was frustrating and somewhat uncomfortable none-the-less.

This morning I woke up and could feel the difference immediately. I have that fabulous pulled-in sensation I was expecting. Now that I’ve read Adelaide’s adventure I understand what happened. Cool. I’ll take it as a sign that I’m working at a deeper level. 🙂

Hi there, I am new here since yesterday, really into callanetics since 4 weeks now, daily. 🙂 combined with a healthy diet to lose some weight as well. I have heard about callanetics years ago, but didnt practice it long enough to see anything.
I am really glad to have joined this site here as it really helps me with the workouts and important things to remember, Thank you for such a great club!!
Anyway… I am even more happier to read this blog because I feel like I am gaining haha…. I felt a change in my tummy area pretty quick, it felt tighter and firmer (I was never blessed with a firm body)…. but this feeling has changed to getting the impression to get bigger!! and bigger haha :)) and this everywhere, even my legs.
So thank you for posting this, this really had helped me alot and I cant wait for my breakthrough.
Will post before and after pics as well, I suppose in summer.
Happy pulsing :)) and thanks again!!

Hi Melanie, it’s wonderful to have you join us and I’m happy that the blog has eased your mind 🙂 Puffy belly syndrome is such a common occurrence in the early days of Callanetics sculpting that it’s always worth continuing to reassure everyone that it’s okay and a good sign. Keep up your regular workouts and please keep in touch. We’d love to see you in The Cafe.

I’m grateful to find this blog post. I’ve started my Callenetics Sessions again after a long hiatus. I’m definitely “puffy” and was worried that I have been doing something wrong. I’ll keep moving forward and add another session today. Is good news reading that I’m making progress 🙂
