When you need to just do it

Posted by:

Thanks for stopping by and reading! Since you’re here, I’m guessing you practice Callanetics or want to know a bit more about it. You’re in the right place!

This week I want to give you the kindest and gentlest kick up the bum…sometimes we need to be challenged to rise up to our potential. Callanetics is very effective at toning and reshaping the body. That’s why we love, of course. It doesn’t happen by osmosis however. You get results from the exercise that you DO.

If you are beginning and feel like the exercise are awkward and feel very unfamiliar, that’s ok! Re-aligning your body and moving in new ways isn’t something that happens overnight. When you are learning anything new you need to give your brain time to ‘get it.’ It takes practice and patience and it also means you need to take off any pressure to be prefect and just start somewhere.

No one is born a master at anything. When we see someone do something that looks effortless and completely second nature to them, what you are seeing is the hours of practice that has gone into it to get them to the point of ‘doing with their eyes shut.’  This applies to anything and everything. If you never cook you are unlikely to nail your very first soufflé. Have you ever done a backflip from standing? It takes practice. (I haven’t by the way!)

You need to be willing to do things the way you do them now so that you can improve and make gains. When it comes to Callanetics, I really encourage you to just do. Yes there is a lot of focus on technique, but fine-tuning is something that will happen naturally as you continue with regular workouts.

Let the instructions wash over you and anything you are ready to hear you will, while anything you are not quite ready for will go unnoticed. It is a good idea to keep mixing up the workouts. You might find that a workout you did two weeks ago you are now understanding more and each time you rotate through you will get a little more out of it.

Your experience of the exercises will continue to evolve as well. Everyone is unique in their experiences and perspectives on everything in life and each of us can only be in our own body. It’s really important to respect where you are on your journey. Your body has lived a different life to everyone else and so you will experience things exactly as YOU are meant to. This is something to be enjoyed! It feels amazing to notice how your body feels and doing so will only help further your whole body awareness. Just as you will hear something when you are ready to hear it, you will feel something when you are ready to feel it. Remember…just do it!

It’s wonderful if you are at the point of wanting to really get into the detail. The truth is that the simplest way to get results is to just do the workouts regularly. When you are really ready for that Ah-ha it will just happen. You will suddenly hear an instruction and the penny will drop.

The main thing you want to keep in mind while working out is that if you feel pain, gently come out of the exercise. Aside from this just go for it! Be mindful of course, but avoid getting hung up on being exact if you are just starting out.

Give yourself time, give your brain and your body time and enjoy to process! You will still get results if you are not doing things 100% correctly. The point is that you are DOING.

Let me know in the comments if you feel like this is you. Do you need to let go of perfectionism and just get started?

I have just posted in the cafe about how much I am enjoying the evolution of Callanetics in my life and I know I have a long way to go being so new to it, but everything about it feels so right and so natural to me and I love that there is no pressure to to push yourself. So true about how some instructions wash over you then other days make complete sense, I can certainly relate to that!

I totally agree, Adelaide. At first I thought this new and improved kind of callanetics was too complicated, that there was too much to keep in mind. But I have found it very relaxing and challenging (in a good way) to be mindful as I exercise. You’re absolutely right about hearing instructions when you’re ready to hear them. I’ve been doing this since March (so almost 4 months) and just yesterday started focusing on stretching the back during ab exercises. Now I look forward to the next session so that I can work on this even more.

This is so true, and more so with Callanetics. Regardless of where you start and your level of mastery you WILL reap immediate and continuous benefits, AS LONG AS YOU DO THEM MINDFULLY AND CONSISTENTLY. So don’t worry about anything other than consistency. All the rest will take care of itself with time. Learn to simply enjoy the process without any pressure to perform. You’ll improve as you go and will be so thankful of your persistence and the increased strength and stability you’ll be gaining as you learn.

Allow yourself to feel the joy that is Callanetics.

I agree 100%. Sometime we spend so much time focusing on what we believe the exercise is going to change in our bodies that we miss exactly how it feels to do the exercise. I feel so good after I finish a workout and it isn’t only because I know it will be easier to fit into my jeans! It is because I can feel every pulse and how it is changing, affecting and reawakening my body. We all aren’t going to be able to get every exercise perfect, 100% of the time. We are going to have days when we just aren’t feeling it or when for some reason that position isn’t comfortable. But that is what makes it even better, because every time you do a workout you are starting from your own unique place. By relaxing and just letting our bodies learn the movements not only will we feel everything more but we will see even more changes in our bodies. Great post, Adelaide!

Thankyou thankyou thankyou Adelaide for writing this article, it’s just something I needed to hear, I do tend to put a lot of pressure on myself to get the exercises exact, so then I stress thinking it’s not working for me, so – I need to chill, take a deep breath & learn to relax & also learn to be patient, no wonder why I’m going backwards sometimes, think I’ll restart again, chill & let it fall into place & also think about what Callan used to say – Your body will stretch when it’s ready to stretch, not when you force it to.

Wow! So happy that this has had the impact I was wanting. We say all through the workouts about relaxing and this is certainly applicable to attitudes as much as muscles!! I hope you have some new experiences with your next few workouts keeping this in mind. Thanks so much to you all for your feedback too!

    Stay Peachy xx
